RIFLE TO 98 K CONFIGURATION. Cal. 8mm Mauser. S# 3918. Bbl. 23 9/16". Numbers match on receiver & bbl. Scarce conversion of "SIMPSON CO & SUHL" 1925 dated rifle to K98 configuration. Rifle given later type laminated wood stock w/ cup type buttplate & steel takedown hole. Balance of furniture is milled. Front sight has been sleeved onto muzzle. Bbl. has several shallow grooves between upper band & front sight. Receiver rail marked on left side "GEW 98". Receiver ring marked on left side w/ "X" & marked on top "SIMPSON & CO" "SUHL" "1925". Marked on right side w/ 3 Wiemar "droop winged" eagles. One is "6" & 2 are "14". Replacement bolt w/ turned down handle has all matching numbers. Follower allows bolt to close on empty mag. Tangent rear sight graduated to 2000m. Inverted "V" front sight. Original leather sling. CONDITION: duffle cut stock set has replaced wood between upper & lower bands. Stock set has been lightly cleaned obscuring markings, leaving stock w/ very nice appearance w/ light wear & handling marks. Stock has 2 1/2" fine crack behind receiver tang & tiny gouge on left side of grip. Metal has been cleaned w/ lightly enhanced finish. Receiver shows scattered very fine pitting. Metal has thinning blue w/ light wear & handling marks. Fair bore w/ lightly worn lands turning dark in the grooves. (21-1005/RW). CURIO. $700-900.
