THE 4TH US CAVALRY. A fine example of a military issue brown leather McClellan type saddle dating sometime in the first quarter of the 20th century. The saddle has an unmarked front shield w/ screwed in loops & rings in front of the seat. The stirrups are single ply leather w/ embossed “US” in oval on the front covering the wooden foot holds. The back of the seat is marked on each side, “E/35”. The blanket measures approx. 28" x 36" at its widest points. The blanket has 1 1/2" gold trim & each rear corner has a 3 1/2" gold & yellow “4”. The blanket is blue w/ a central 3 1/2" black stripe. The blanket is edged w/ black & backed w/ brown wool. The red & white swallow tail guidon measures 15 1/2" in height & nearly 21" to each peak. The top white half has a red “4” centrally located & the lower red half has a white “C A V” centrally applied. The 4th US Cavalry has quite an illustrious history including significant service during the Philippine Insurrection. In 1907 they were reassigned to Ft. Meade, South Dakota w/ part of the regiment going to Ft. Snelling, MN. In 1911 the 4th Cavalry was sent to the Mexican border & in 1913 departed for Schofield Barracks, HI where they served throughout WWI. In 1919 the regiment returned to the Mexican border & subsequently back to Ft. Meade, SD. Judging by the construction of this saddle, it likely dates between 1900-1920. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: a binder containing research on the 4th Cavalry. CONDITION: the saddle shows light to moderate wear overall & displays very well. The blanket also shows light to moderate wear but colors remain vivid. The guidon shows light wear & a few very minor tiny stains. (02-15036/BF). $500-700.
